Flood repair in Wood Dale, July 19, 2019

Part of my basement flooded from a detached and spraying sump pump pipe. Carpet and drywall destroyed. I received a return phone call in 10 minutes. Had an estimate in less than 24 hours and work started within 48 hrs. Joe coordinated with the insurance guy to go ahead and start the work before adjuster came. Work is done and looks great. You can’t ask for anything more responsive and professional. I am hiring him to do a remodel of some rooms.

Hire Again:  Yes
Approximate Cost:  $300.00
Description Of Work:  Roof inspection to determine source of leaks.  All potential areas were caulked.  Work was guaranteed.
Member Comments: I received a call from Joe within minutes of my request.  My roof had been leaking on and off in the same spot for 2 years.  I had three other roofers “repair” but the leak would still appear. Mike came out the next day and inspected the roof inside and out.  He caulked all potential leak points and said that if we had any future trouble that he would gladly come back.  It’s rained several times this week and we’ve had no leaking, so I’m confident that all is okay.  Now I don’t have to worry that my stockpots aren’t out to catch the drips if I’m not home when it rains.  Thank you, Thrifty Nickel!

Description Of Work:  Reroof a house and 2 garages
Member Comments: They came out and gave the bids right away. The bids were a little higher than some of the others I had received but because they were so prompt I asked if there was anything they could do to work with me on the price. Joe said he was not willing to compromise on quality of the products to come down on price and have a lesser quality product in the end, which I appreciated. However he was able to work with me a little and we were able to come to a compromise. His foreman, Don, was awesome! Any questions I had he was able to answer and was always very prompt and professional. The crew was here just as expected, on time and clean and very respectful of landscaping, noise, no loud music, no foul language, just real nice guys. The roofs look great and the surrounding area looked liked they’d never been here.

Description Of Work:  rehab flips
Member Comments: I have been working with Joe and his Company for about 2 years now. I met him originally on one of my first flip homes in the Des Plaines area. He came on time with his Electrician, HVAC Tech, Plumber, and his carpenters to formulate a working bid on the spot. I was impressed with that from the start. They impressed me as professional and ready to work.

Since that initial meeting, Joe and the guys have completed several flip homes for me in the Des Plaines, Niles, Morton Grove, Skokie area. They have always been extremely quick with a very high level of Joe’s attention to detail. Joe likes to walk through the projects and put the finishing touches on himself as he is very concerned about the final product.

Thrifty Nickel did a town home for me in Melrose Park that took only17 days from the time I closed on the purchase to when it was re-listed for sale. Unreal ! The first people through the door madean offer too. That home was a complete Kitchen, Baths and basement was unfinished. In 17 days they finished the basement framing and electrical, Installed new electrical service at the panel, carpeted the home, refinished the wood floors, made the 3 season room a permanent room in the home, did all the tile and trim work, painted the entire home and garage, stained the deck, installed new garage door, Roofed the garage, repaired some siding on the home, Did all the landscaping, Painted the entire interior, customized trim to really make the flooring pop, installed all the appliances in the new kitchen, ran ducting for new fans, etc, etc, etc……… If someone would have seen this foreclosure, they would not have believed 17 days later it would be a stunning new property.

That is the level of service I grew to expect and was never disappointed by Joe and the guys. The phones are always answered promptly and they tend to my needs in a very expeditious fashion.

Being a high volume, rapid turn business, I base my business model off the performance of my contractors. I have never had any problems with performance, communication, or level of quality.

I buy foreclosures and gut them to the studs. Joe and his team come in and turn them into beautiful homes with high end finishes that sell quickly. They perform every aspect of the job and coordinate any outside services. I tell them what I want, and its done.

I have , and will continue to refer them to everyone I know who needs the services of Thrifty Nickel Handyman. If you are ever in a pickle, Call Joe at Thrifty Nickel !!!  Thanks, Joe.

I needed a basement gas fireplace/stone hearth removed. Joe and team were excellent. On time, worked quickly but incredibly clean. The crew was very polite and communicated well. Unplanned, I needed them to stop at a point in time to give another contractor space to complete some foundation sealing and there was no issue. They worked with me on the follow-up and Nancy came to make sure job was going well and scheduled the final few hours of work. We are already scheduling time for them to quote more work in the basement, we were so pleased.

We had a big wooden shed that had alot of weather damage inside and out. It needed to be taken down, and alot of the stuff inside needed to be thrown out too. It went amazing well! The guys showed up on time and worked very hard to get the shed down safely. The owner came out for a while in the beginning and returned in the end to make sure everything was done to our satisfaction. Joe worked along with his employees. I would definitely hire them again!

Hire Again:  Yes
Approximate Cost:  $800.00
Home Build Year:  1988
Description Of Work:  Installation of new patio door (hinged french door) . Price was for removal of old door and installation of new door (price did not include the door itself)
Member Comments:  I’ve owned four homes, built one, and worked with a number of handymen both good and bad over the years. I found Joe Dopp of the Thrifty Nickel Handyman on on Angie’s list, and I’ve been very happy with his work.,  He has completed several projects, and I plan to use him for larger projects in the future.

I recently bought a house that needed a lot of little things and a few big things done.  I invited Joe out and provided him with a written list of repair items, and Joe walked through the house and quickly jotted down quotes next to each item. Joe is a people person, he’s friendly, and shares his ideas freely about what you ask him, and even some things you don’t.  (He gave me the name of a painter he likes to use, who has done excellent work for me at a great value)   While Joe does some work himself, he functions mainly as a GC, bringing in carpenters, plumbers, electricians, etc.  He has a very easygoing manner, and before the first project, I wondered if his attention to detail would good, and if he would stick to his quoted prices. He performed well in both areas.
He re-vented two bathroom fans on the second floor that were improperly vented out the soffit instead of the room. The cost for fixing the vents, and installing 2 new fans was around $450.  (I bought the fans separately)
He brought in an electrician to replace underfused breakers and terminate some loose wires in my breaker box for about $350.
He and his carpenters replaced a rotted french door, and did a beautiful job with the trimming – especially the exterior. They moved a heat duct in the floor (because the new door opened from the other side as the old one) and were finished up in half a day.
Joe is a pleasure to work with – professional, responsive, and focused on customer service. If you know exactly what you want, Joe can do it – just make make sure he knows how you want it done.  If you need ideas, he has a lot of experience in whole house renovation, and will be able to give you some ideas.
